Derrick Morgan is one of the early pioneers of ska and rocksteady in Jamaica and got his start professionally in Kingston in 1957. In 1960 Morgan became the only artist ever to fill the places from one to seven on the Jamaican pop chart simultaneously. Fast forward to the mid-1960s and Morgan's cover of Ben E. King's soul hit, "Seven Letters" is often cited as the first true reggae single.
Derrick Morgan has been an influence on generations of musicians and celebrated his 60th anniversary as a performer at the 2017 Supernova International Ska Festival.
